The challenge

With over 750+ different mobile device type combinations (between operating systems and hardware vendors), the challenge was to test all the mobile applications in the various devices in an automated manner. This challenge was compounded by a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy that allowed security guards to run apps on their own personal devices. As a result, comprehensive mobile application testing had become an enormous challenge.

Manually testing across this many device combinations was neither practical nor scalable. The company needed a way to significantly expand test coverage and verify application performance across hundreds of device types, without increasing tester resources or slowing down deployment.

The solution

PhoenixDX addressed the challenge by combining purpose-built application test scripts with AWS Device Farm - Amazon's cloud-based mobile testing service - to automate testing across hundreds of device and OS combinations simultaneously.

By integrating application-specific test scripts with AWS Device Farm's automated tests for common mobile functions, the solution significantly increased the resilience and reliability of the mobile applications. Test coverage was expanded dramatically without the need for additional tester resources.

Critically, the automated testing framework was embedded directly into the DevOps deployment pipeline, ensuring that quality assurance became a continuous, seamless part of the development and release process rather than a manual step at the end.
